Engineering, architecture, science and technology are the four main areas of knowledge of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC), a public university with an offer of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees that provides students with competencies and skills to face the new challenges with technological criteria of efficiency and sustainability. It is a forum of knowledge that promotes learning and personal growth through a dynamic and motivating teaching model that includes mobility programmes, international double degrees, work placement and participation in leading research projects.
The UPC is a young university that was founded in 1971 through the merging of several schools with a history of more than one hundred years. It has schools and facilities on campuses in seven Catalan cities: Barcelona, Castelldefels, Igualada, Manresa, Sant Cugat del Vallès , Terrassa and Vilanova i la Geltrú. The course offering for the 2017-2018 academic year comprises 66 bachelor’s degrees, 73 master’s degrees (24 of them taught entirely in English) and 49 doctoral programmes. It currently has over 31,000 students, and 26% of students studying for a master’s degree are from abroad.
The UPC’s intense academic and research activity has positioned it in the main international rankings: according to the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (the Shanghai Ranking), the UPC is among the 400 top universities in the world and among the top 100 in the subject fields of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science and Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, 2016). The QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking (2016) places it among the 35 best young universities in the world. In the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2017), the UPC is among the top 30 universities in the world in the field of architecture, the top 40 in Civil and Structural Engineering and the top 100 in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mathematics.
The UPC promotes the internationalisation of its studies through exchange agreements with more than 750 higher education institutions around the world and double degrees with prestigious universities. It also leads international research and innovation projects (it is the leading university in Catalonia in the number of projects funded through the Horizon 2020 programme) and promotes the participation of the university community in mobility programmes and development cooperation projects.
