In its 500 years of university life, Barcelona has committed itself to provide a high quality education offer, without forgetting our history and traditions.
The Catalan university system depends on the Ministry of Business and Knowledge, according to the legal framework in Spain which allows the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, the Generalitat, to take full responsibility for education at all levels in Catalonia.
The main aspects over which the Ministry has jurisdictional power, regarding the universities, are university programming; the creation of new public universities and the recognition of private universities; the approval of the public universities statutes; the programming and implementation of new studies and research activities and the elaboration, approval and control of the universities’ budgets.

Xarxa FP is a non-profit association of European cities founded in 1999 by the Barcelona Education Institut (IMEB) with the objective to collaborate on the improvement of Vocational Education and Training (VET), through mobility programs, traineeships and in-company work placements, as well as the promotion of joint strategies among the European cities therein. At present, Xarxa FP comprises up to 22 European cities of 8 different countries. Xarxa FP’s mission is to propel VET students and professional’s mobility to undertake work placements in companies located in the partner cities, therefore enriching their comprehensive education. Xarxa FP also enables the exchange of methodology and education experiences between VET schools and teachers, along with companies and local authorities across Europe.
