We attend a progressive marginalization of Mongolian women since ancient times in which they developed central social roles, such as shamanic activities, until the twentieth century that tried to make them “housewives” of a new urban sedentary society. But the contradictions and shortcomings of modernity in Mongolia have opened up unexpected opportunities for empowerment for women in this culture today.
