Scientific articles published by research staff of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), a foundation launched in 2001 by the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia with the aim of attracting, selecting, and hiring leading international researchers to work at research centers and universities in Catalonia, are among the most cited publications in the world. Specifically, 91% of the 2,020 publications produced by ICREA researchers in 2018 are in the 25% of greatest impact.

10 of its hired researchers are among the 1% of the most cited scientists in the world, according to the prestigious ranking of Clarivate Analytics based on data from Web of Science 2018.

Of the 10 most cited, 3 belong to the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), 2 to the Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), and the others to the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), the Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF), the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) and the Catalan Institute of Water Research (ICRA) .

ICREA stands out for producing high quality publications with a leading capacity among the scientific community. This puts ICREA as one of the leading scientific institutions in the world in terms of the percentage of researchers with the highest impact rate (3.8%), behind other centers such as Harvard University (7.7 %), Stanford (4.5%), or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (4.3%), and ahead – for example – of prestigious universities such as Cambribge (2.5%) and Oxford (2, 4%).
