Marcus du Sautoy: Symmetry. From geometry to music

Symmetry is a fundamental concept in various branches of mathematics, such as geometry, group theory and number theory. Marcus du Sautoy, PhD in Mathematics and professor at the University of Oxford, will explain the concept of symmetry – present from the walls of the Alhambra to the Higgs boson, from Bach’s music to deadly viruses – in these parts of mathematics and other scientific disciplines. In the second part of the session, he will explain how many composers have been particularly fascinated by the use of the concept of symmetry in their work throughout history. And finally, he and cellist Laia Puig will perform live the piece ‘Nomos Alpha’ by the Greek composer Iannis Xenakis. Through powerful visual images, he will explain how the composer uses the symmetry of a cube to determine musical parameters. Ticket: €6 (it includes entry to the exhibitions).
